Kicking off with a small group of famous celebrities – @Flotus (Michelle Obama), @ZacEfron, @ChanningTatum, @JohnLegend, etc. – Twitter has started rolling out new profiles. As outlined in a blog post, the new redesign will be available across the whole site “in the coming weeks”.

Twitter redesign summary

The new update puts a much bigger emphasis on visual elements allowing Twitter users to customise their profile headers, use larger profile photos, show off their best tweets and more.

Here is a summary of the main features:

  • Twitter header – increase in size from 520 x 260px to a whopping 1500 x 500px
  • Profile photo – increase in size from 73 x 73px to a much larger 184 x 184px. (You can also now find it on the left-hand side of your profile)
  • Pinned tweet – visible only on the web, Twitter users can now pin one of their tweets to the top of their profile page
  • Best tweets – tweets that have received more engagement will appear slightly larger
  • Filtered tweets – when viewing a user’s profile there are three new options: you can browse Tweets, Tweets with Photos/Videos, or Tweets and Replies. Also the way Twitter displays the followers, followed people and tweets with photos/videos has changed – it’s more Pinterest-like now

Wonder when this arrives to the UK – I’d say maybe a few weeks wait! Yes, people have complained that Twitter is trying to look more like Facebook but I think the design update makes it look much better – it’s looked the same for so long now, don’t you think? This reminds me, have you noticed Facebook has played with its design too? Don’t think it was that successful – to me, it looks quite dated.

Overall, well done Twitter!
